스위스는 유럽 하이엔드 오디오의 심장 중 하나다. 골드문트, 다즐 등 다양한 브랜드가 정밀 공학과 개성 넘치는 아이디어를 통해 독보적인 제품을 다수 개발, 생산해왔다. 하지만 최근 10년간 스위스에도 새로운 바람이 불면서 CH 프리시전, 뵈니케 등 다양한 브랜드가 수면 위로 올라와 급부상한 상태다. 그러나 대부분 대중들이 넘보기 힘든 고가의 하이엔드 기기가 대부분이다.
최근 왓슨 오디오는 스위스 메이커지만 그리 높지 않은 가격대에 컴팩트 사이즈로 젊은 음악 애호가에게 커다란 호응을 얻고 있다. 기존 왓슨 Analog, 왓슨 Digital이 그 증거. 이번엔 아얘 내부에 DAC를 내장한 스트리밍 플레이어를 내놓았다. 견고한 알루미늄 블록 섀시에 미니멀 디자인이 스위스 메이드임을 알려준다. 애초에 CH 프리시전의 네트워크 보드를 만든 브랜드다.
일단 내부에 듀얼 모노 DAC를 내장하고 다양한 디지털 입력 및 RCA, XLR아나로그 출력단을 설계해놓았다. 내부 디지털 프로세싱은 왓슨의 모회사인 Enginneered SA의 독보적인 오버샘플링을 기반으로 한다. 아나그램 테크로로지로부터 진화시켜온 독자적 디지털 보간기법을 더욱 발전적인 형태로 완성해 탑재한 것이다. 더불어 타이달, 코부즈 등에 대응하며 UPnP, ROON에도 대응해 활용폭은 무척 넓다.
더불어 LEEDH 프로세싱을 통해 만든 볼륨단도 주목할만하다. 일반적인 디지털 볼륨은 다이내믹레인지를 감쇄시키고 정보량을 급격히 떨어트려 음원의 음질을 훼손한다. 하지만 LEEDH 프로세싱의 경우 양자화 노이즈를 최소화시키면서 동시에 아날로그 컨트롤의 단점까지도 해소한 볼륨 성능을 갖추었다. 루민, 소울루션, 메트로놈이 이를 사용할만큼 검증받았다.
가격은 3,199유로. 기존 라인업에 비하면 높은 가격대지만 성능이 기대되는 건 어쩔 수 없다.
